Melvin Bailey

Melvin Bailey, 97, of Columbia died Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at his residence. Born in Casey County, he was the son of the late James Alford and Mary Burton Bailey and husband of the late Edith Burton Bailey.

Mr. Bailey was retired from the U. S. Army serving in World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War. He was also retired from International Harvester and was a member of the VFW post 6097.

His survivors include six children, Harold (Bertha) Bailey of Edinburgh, Ind., Donna (Joseph) Simmons of Jeffersonville, Ind., Carolyn Burton of Columbia, James L. (Lisa) Bailey of Columbia, Ruth (Danny) Shaw of Edmonton, and Lisa Bailey of Scottsburg, Ind.; one brother, B. J. Bailey of Westport, Ind.; one sister, Alice Leona Burton of Sarasota, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; six great great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Roger Bailey; two grandsons, Harold and Jamie Bailey; two brothers, Hershel and Arthur Bailey; and four sisters, Cleda Bridenstin, Marie Toler, Eva Callam, and Bertha Barker.

A military graveside was held at 10:30am on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at the Haven Hill Cemetery with full Military Honors provided by VFW Post 6097. Visitation was on Friday from 3:00pm-8:00pm at the Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home and continued Saturday morning until 10:00am.

The pallbearers were Jaylyn Bailey, Jamian Bailey, Derrick Redman, Juan Hughes, Bobby Johnson, and Thomas Wade.
