The Adair County OneCall messaging system is up and running, and has been utilized three times within the past 30 days.
According to Adair County Schools Superintendent Darrell Treece, the first time the system was used originally had been set for a test run but turned out to be a real message.
"We had set the system for a test run on January 7th and it turned out that we had to cancel school for the following day so we went ahead and sent out the school cancellation message for January 8th, which gave us our first look at how the system worked," said Treece.
Since the initial run the system has been used on two other occasions and according to Treece has been very affective.
"The times that we have used the messaging system seems to have worked very well in getting the cancellations or delays out to parents but we still have a few numbers that need to be updated," stated Treece.
The next time the system was used occurred last Thursday, when school was cancelled for Friday due the winter storm that blanketed most of the southeast with up to 10 inches of snow.
The massive snowfall also resulted in the system being used to cancel school yesterday as well.
According to Treece after each time the messaging system has completed the call cycle, the district is provided with a call stats sheet in which the central office uses to update phone numbers.
For instance, last Thursday the system completed 2,844 calls, of which 1,150 of the calls were answered, six were busy, two were blocked, 1,052 were duplicate numbers (the phone number was listed for more than one student such as brother and sister), six were unknown, 144 were not answered, 389 answering machines picked up the call and 97 were disconnected.
According to Treece the system completed the calls to 85.88 percent of the students enrolled in the school district.
"We had almost 86 percent of the students who received the call but we would like to get that number up and we are currently working to update all of the phone numbers in the student's file to make sure all the information and the phone numbers we have on file are correct," commented Treece.
To ensure the central office has the correct information for each student, parents or guardians are asked to contact Rita Carter at the Adair County School Board Central office at 270-384-2476.
In addition, anyone that received a call and does not have a child who attends school in the district needs to contact Carter as well to have their number removed from the call list as well.
