The Adair County High School Academic Team begins its quest for spots in the Governor's Cup State Finals this weekend when it travels to Green County for the Governor's Cup District competition.
Competing with teams from Green County, Russell County and Casey County, the Adair County team is shooting for its fifth straight district championship. If the team advanced to the regional, it will then go for its sixth straight regional championship.
According to coach Brett Reliford, the academic team will be striving to build on past successes in the district competition. Last year, 17 of the 18 individual written assessment competitors qualified for the region, the most of any team in the state. Also, the Adair County Future Problem Solving team has not finished lower than first in the district since the program was brought back to ACHS in 2006, and has made it to the state finals each year.
Members of the Adair County Academic Team will be competing in two team events - Quick Recall and Future Problem Solving - along with individual written assessment competitions in math, science, social studies, language arts, arts and humanities and composition.
The members of the ACHS academic team that will participate in the district competitions are:
•Seniors - Chris Lloyd, Elton Cheng, Kelsey Castaneda, Paige Coomer, Ariel Harris, Baylee Johnson, Cody Willis, Ryan Bloyd, Krissy Thomas and Joseph Grider.
•Juniors - Luke Maupin, Ryan Montgomery, Jake Liebeck, Aaron Bradshaw and Chase Yaden.
•Sophomores - Melanie Alexander, Eddie Franklin, Audra Turner, Kyle Mann, Mary Susan Coomer and Ashley Neat.
•Freshmen - Heather Jackson, Noah Richard, Emmalee Baker, Roslin Wilson, Alison Feese and Abby Walker.
The district meet is the first level of the State Governor's Cup competition. The next level is the regional and the last stage is the State Finals. Over 20,000 students take park in the Governor's Cup across the state and it begins at this level of competition. The Governor's Cup competition is divided into 16 regions across the Commonwealth and 64 districts within those regions, the same formula used for KHSAA basketball.
