The Adair County Marching Band is heading to the Kentucky Music Educators Association State semi-finals and finals competition for their 24th appearance in the KMEA State Championship competition. Adair earned the right to participate in the championship by winning the KMEA Class AAA Western Regional competition this past Saturday.
Adair County will take the field at the semi-finals at Meade County High School at 2:15 p.m. this Saturday and according to Adair Band Director Tom Case are looking to reclaim the title from last year's state champion Bourbon County, directed by Adair County graduate Eric Hale.
In addition to Bourbon County in the semi-finals, Adair will face off against Rockcastle County, Larue County, Mason County, Hart County, Powell County, Calloway County, Estill County, Warren East, Boyle County, Garrard County, Russell County, Rowan County, Taylor County and Highlands High School.
"We set our goal to become the state champion and we are not going to let anybody dictate how we feel about ourselves because we said all along we are going to be the best Adair County Band we could be," said Case.
If Adair County can take one of the top four spots at the semi-final competition they will travel to Papa John's Stadium in Louisville to perform in the finals later Saturday evening.
Going into the competition this weekend, Case believes the band is right where it should be and has great confidence they will raise to the occasion.
"I have every confidence in the world that these kids can make a good run for the title because we have a great group of seniors that worked as mentors to our younger members and I think we developed our identity as a top band around mid September and we are right where we should be," commented Case.
In his first year as the director of the Adair County Marching Band, Case came into the position with a young group of musicians.
"We have a young group and we were slow getting started but have developed fast and the support of our boosters, parents and fans it has been a smooth transition," said Case.
