Veterans Remembered During Special Program

By Paul B. Hayes on November 05,2009

Adair County veterans who served their country from the Civil War to the present conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan were paid tribute to Monday night in a special program at the Adair County Public Library, and also had their contributions preserved for future generations.
The highlight of the program, sponsored by the Adair County Genealogy Society and the library was a Power Point presentation that had pictures and biographical information on 193 veterans who served the country in the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The audience for the event included a number of local veterans, families of deceased veterans, along with other community members.
The Color Guard from VFW Post #6097 was present for the program, and gave a demonstration on the proper way to fold a flag.
After the reading of Lawrence Vaincourt's poem, "Just a Common Soldier," by Lila Ford, the Power Point presentation was shown.
Afterwards, family members of veterans shared some of their memories. Joe Flowers read from letters his late father, Alfred Flowers, who was decorated turret gunner aboard a bomber during World War II, had written home to his parents while in the war. And, sisters Sharon Feese and Sandy Wilkinson shared a story about the medals of their late father, Thomas Moore, who served in the Pacific theater during World War II. Due to a mix up of some sorts, Moore never received the medals he was awarded during the war until 1985, when he was honored with a special presentation conducted at Ft. Knox.
At the conclusion of the program, refreshments were served and many of the veterans shared their experiences with one another.
DVDs for sale, others forthcoming
In an effort to help preserve the contributions of our local veterans, the Genealogy Society and the library have converted the Power Point presentation to a DVD, and these are presently being sold at the library for $10. The DVD will play on any type of DVD player.
And, according to Lila Ford, Genealogy Society treasurer and editor of the Adair County Review, the society's newsletter, they will be making a new DVD each year of other local veterans.
"We plan on doing this annually," Ford explained. "Anyone that would like to a veteran included on the next one can bring the photo and information to the library, or by Curry's Floor Covering, anytime from now through next fall, and we'll include it on next year's."
