Preliminary statistics* indicate that twelve people died in twelve separate crashes on Kentucky roadways from Monday, August 10 through Sunday, August 16, 2009.
Nine of the crashes involved motor vehicles and 6 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Daviess, Franklin, Henderson, Marion, McCracken, Meade, Pike, Powell and Webster counties.
Two motorcycle fatalities occurred and neither victim was wearing a helmet. These crashes occurred in Barren and Muhlenberg counties.
One pedestrian fatality occurred in Boone county.
Through August 16, preliminary statistics* indicate that 471 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2009. This is 11 fewer fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2008. There were 383 motor vehicle fatalities and 208 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Twenty pedestrians have been killed. Fifty-five fatalities involved a motorcycle and ten fatalities involved an ATV. A total of 103 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
