Most Important resource
TO THE VOTERS OF ADAIR COUNTY, I would like to pose a question to the citizens of Adair County. What is our most important resource? Ask any parent or grandparent, and I'm sure the answer will be - our children. Now, we have the opportunity to help ensure a better future for our most important resource. Despite the tough economic times we've endured over the past few years - and continue to endure - our community has been blessed to have received many major improvements. Some of these include: •Our new Columbia Bypass, built at a cost of approximately $24 million; •The reconstruction of KY 61 South from the city limits to the Louie B. Nunn Parkway and the building of a second parkway interchange, at a cost of around $11 million. •The ongoing reconstruction of KY 61 South from the parkway to the Cumberland County line at a cost of approximately $22 million. •The new Adair County Justice Center, which will be completed in just weeks, at a cost of around $12 million. •The new Adair County Elementary School, built at a cost of approximately $9 million. •The new water treatment plant at Green River Lake, built at a cost of around $14 million. •An additional $7 million more for new water lines, storage tanks, etc. for the Adair County Water District. •Expansion of Columbia City Hall, at a cost of $1 million-plus. •Around $38 million in capital improvements being made at Lindsey Wilson College, including work still ongoing. •The new Wal-Mart Supercenter, built at a cost of around $20 million. In the past four years, more that $150 million dollars in improvements have been made in our community, and AT NO EXPENSE WHATSOEVER TO US IN TERMS OF ADDITIONAL TAX DOLLARS. All these projects have not cost any Adair Countian one extra cent in taxes. Now it is time for us, the citizens of Adair County, to step forward and help ourselves a little bit by voting for the "nickel"tax that the Adair County Board of Education needs to build a new school to replace Col. William Casey Elementary. The "nickel" tax will cost the average property owner around $20 or so per year, and will generate roughly $349,000 per year in revenues that can be used to build the new school and make needed improvements to other facilities. In fact, the only way money generated by the "nickel tax" can be spent is for capital improvements. No one, including myself, wants to pay additional taxes, but we must realize that tax dollars are what provides us with roads, public water, schools, and many other things that we could not provide ourselves individually. When it comes to helping the young people of Adair County I'm willing to pay my fair share for our young people, our future. They're depending on us now, and in years to come we will be depending on them to take care of us. We can't depend on the state and federal governments to continue to provide us with everything we need. At some point, we have to help take care of ourselves, and we are at that point. The people of Adair County need to stand up and help share the cost. Again, I pose the question to parents and grandparents, "What is our most precious resource?" What are we willing to do to provide them with modern, safe schools like those found in neighboring counties?
